Counters
Quartz
Quartz counter tops are engineered with pure quartz crystals, uniting nature and science together, delivering drama and beauty without sacrificing performance. Quartz is perfect for people with a specific colour in mind that is not available in granite. Quartz counters are low maintenance, durable, and heat and scratch resistant.
Granite
Granite counter tops have been around for decades due to their natural beauty, durability and return value when it comes time to sell. With more than 3000 granite colours being mined around the world, each piece of granite used is unique, with a wide variety of veins, swirls, and crystal patterns.
Solid Surfaces
Solid Surface counter tops are widely used in commercial applications, such as hospitals, restaurants and retail stores, due to the design versatility, stylish inlays, virtually invisible seams, and limitless edging and colour options. Made of 100% acrylic resins, Solid Surface counters are nonporous, fire-retardant, and proprietary colouring agents that create uniform colour throughout the surface thickness.
Counter FAQ
Listed below are some of our most common questions about countertops. If you have additional questions, please contact us 1 877-648-7997
Will our countertop have a seam?
Our goal is to install every counter without a seam to reduce the time during the installation, however, if the counter piece exceeds 8.5 feet (102 inches), by 4 feet (48 inches) in an “L” or “U” shape configuration, it will require a seam. If a seam is required, it is often no wider than a razorblade, compared to thicker granites that normally require a 1/8 inch gap or more because they require sufficient separation to pack the stone adhesive deep enough between the two pieces to prevent the seam from separating over time.
Can we cut on our granite countertop or set a hot pan on it?
You can cut on granite, but since it is nearly as hard as a diamond you may want to spare dulling your sharp knives or damaging expensive cutlery. Be careful when setting a hot pan on your granite due to the fact that stone retains heat and remains hot to the touch for a long period of time.
What is the difference in weight for Granite Overlay, Granite, Quartz and Solid Surface?
Granite overlay and solid surface materials range from 3 to 4 lbs per square foot, compared to 2cm granite or quartz at 14 lbs, or 3cm granite or quartz at 22 lbs.
How is Granite Overlay 10 times stronger than 1 1/4" (3cm) granite?
Granite overlay or “SmartStone” counters are reinforced with a woven fiberglass backing which allows the slab to flex without breaking. The surface can withstand 5000 lbs of downward force, making “SmartStone” one of the most durable granites in the world.
Why wouldn't we just tear out our countertop instead of covering over what we have?
Tearing out a counter top is costly and may cause collateral damage to your cabinets and surrounding areas. Counter tops provide added strength to cabinets in the same manner that drywall adds strength to framed walls. “SmartStone” granite overlays are light weight, and will not cause stress damage to existing cabinets that were not designed to handle the excessive weight of 1 ¼” (3cm) granite counter tops.
How hard is it to reseal granite and how often does it need to be done?
Sealing or resealing natural granite is as simple as applying polish to your furniture. granite overlays require less sealing because our stones are thinner combined with the fiberglass backing which slows the evaporation process over time. How often a counter needs to be resealed depends on the colour of the stone, however normally we recommend every two years for our counter tops, compared to ¾” (2cm) once a year, or 1 ¼” (3cm) every 6 months.

Quartz Countertop Care
Quartz surfaces are very easy to maintain and are extremely resistant to scratches, chemicals, dulling, and abrasion, but not heat and scratch-proof. Use trivets or hot pads with hot pots and a cutting board when using a knife. Polished to a high gloss shine, surfaces are also very resistant to staining and do not require sealant or waxes, because the surface is nonporous. Avoid using bleaches, very strong chemicals and solvents, including paint removers and furniture strippers. Never use any product containing Methylene Chloride or trichlorethane.
Additionally avoid products that contain Pine oil. Pine oil leaves a residue that attracts and holds dirt on the surface, diminishing its cleanliness and even its appearance. Likewise do not use abrasive scrubs and/or cleaners with either soft or hard abrasive particles. Although the abrasives will not damage Quartz these products leave a powder residue if not thoroughly rinsed. This residue will be noticeable especially with darker colours.
DAILY CARE:
Use a damp cloth or paper towel, and if necessary, a small amount of non-bleach, nonabrasive cleaner. Although Quartz is quite stain resistant all food and liquid spills should be cleaned up as soon as possible. With the proper care, your quartz surface will stay new-looking for many years
to come.
Should you notice a mark on your counter top the chart below has been prepared to assist:
HOW TO REMOVE MARKS ON QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS:
For stubborn stains use a non abrasive cleaning pad along with glass/surface cleaner. If materials have adhered to the surface, such as gum, paint, nail-polish, etc. remove by gently scraping the surface with a plastic putty knife. A steel putty knife and or razor may be also used with the
appropriate handling precautions. The Quartz surface is much harder than the steel blade itself. Thus with excessive scraping of surface by a steel putty knife or razor the blade may degrade itself and leave a mark on the surface. This kind of mark can usually be removed with a light
scrubbing pad.
After removing the material from the spot it may be helpful to treat the area with a cleaner or solvent. Soaking a cloth with the cleaning agent and letting the damp cloth sit on the stain for 5 minutes may be helpful prior to final scrubbing and/or rinsing of the stain. Quartz countertops are impervious and will keep its radiance without polishing. However, in residential applications occasional polishing can enhance resistance and ease of cleaning. Any commercial granite polishing product may be used. Granite Care
Granite is extremely hard, heat and scratch resistant, however, you should use caution when cutting directly on or applying high temperatures to the surface. Granite holds heat which could cause injury. Cutting directly on the granite surface will damage cutlery and is not recommended. Do not stand, sit, or lean heavily around sinks, cook tops, or weak areas within your counter top. Avoid dropping anything heavy directly on the counter top or banging stoves, fridges, and or chairs against the edges. Granite is one of the most durable
products known but is not indestructible.
Make sure standing water around the faucet, soap dispenser, and or filtration systems, is removed immediately. Inspect seals regularly and tighten fixtures as necessary to prevent water from swelling the wooden sub-base underneath the granite.
DAILY CARE:
Daily care is as easy as cleaning with water and a clear mild dishwashing liquid. Blot up spills immediately verses wiping, rinse clean, and dry with a soft cloth.
To reduce grease buildup on your countertop, mix 500ml – 1L water with 1 – 2 teaspoons of clear mild dishwashing liquid, and 3 – 4 tablespoons of white vinegar into a common house hold spray bottle. Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or any heavy-acidic cleaning materials on your granite counter top. These include concentrated vinegar, ammonia, orange, lemon, degreasers, and or bleach base cleaners. If needed use a synthetic scrubbing pad or razor blade to remove hard deposits on your granite counter.
With the proper care, your granite surface will stay new-looking for many years to come. Should you notice a mark on your counter top the chart below has been prepared to assist:

Protecting the Surface
Although solid surface materials are resistant to most common household chemicals, avoid exposing the surface to harsh chemicals such as toilet bowl cleaners, drain cleaners, rust removers, contact adhesive solvent, ceramic cooktop cleaners, oven cleaners, paint or varnish removers, lacquer thinners, metal cleaners, and products containing acetone, which may mar or permanently damage if allowed to remain on the surface for an extended period. Accidental spills or splatters from harsh materials should be wiped off immediately and then rinsed with water, using the appropriate safety measures to avoid injury.
